To My Friends in the CCR: Why You Shouldn’t Attend SSPX Mass

Dear friends in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR), this post is for you.

Because some of you are taking the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) and its programmes a bit too seriously. Founded in 1970, SSPX claims to be Catholic but does not accept Catholic teaching—especially anything taught since Vatican II. They bizarrely believe worship should be offered only in the Latin language, oppose ecumenism and in general, shun any kind of progress.

Why the CCR and the SSPX are completely incompatible

Purely because of what SSPX believes and teaches about the CCR. Let’s look at the most important stuff.

1. On the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

CCR: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit or BHS as it’s popularly known is the doorway into Charismatic spirituality, by which a person receives the life-transforming presence and power of the Holy Spirit.

SSPX: The BHS is “obviously a mockery of the sacrament of Confirmation…”, “a sin” and a result of “heretical worship” (How about that worship leaders?)

2. On the gift of tongues

CCR: The gift of tongues is a a legitimate gift of the Holy Spirit, similar to what we read about in the book of Acts.

SSPX: “Either one of two explanations seems probable: that the subject really wills—perhaps unconsciously—to perform this act because of group dynamics (or mass hysteria) or that his utter relaxation of the will leaves him open to a true manifestation of the “spirit”—and not the Holy Spirit! Speaking a language one does not understand is a classic sign of diabolical possession, after all.”

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, anyone?

3.  On other charismatic gifts

CCR: Charisms are gifts of the Spirit used to gather, sanctify, edify and minister life in the Church and in the world.

SSPX: “Prophecies, healings, miracles, etc., were given [in Apostolic times only] to prove the claims of the Church and to foster conversions. With the achievement of the Church’s moral universality, the need for such phenomena ceased for several reasons, primarily because of the presence in the Church of people of every nationality and because of the Church’s proven record as the true religion, short though it was.”

According to the SSPX, God no longer needs to perform signs and wonders. Maybe they should visit the Middle East/Africa to understand how universal Christian morality really is.

4. What else does SSPX teach about charismatic spirituality?

Still not convinced? Check this out:

“The CCR as a whole is not a Catholic movement at all but a deception of the Devil.”

“Charismatics’ beliefs and practices are undeniably based in heresy,”

“The Catholic Charismatic Movement is a blighted tree bearing poisonous fruit, sown by the Devil… This fruit is truly a seed of destruction and one of the most perilous fruits offered to man since the first fruit offered to the first Eve by the same serpent.”

Need I say more?

So, if you are a charismatic Christian, according to the SSPX, you are a sinner, heretic and probably possessed by the devil.

There is no disclaimer in the SSPX site that this article is not their official position, therefore it must be.

Bottom line: you can either be in the CCR or the SSPX—there’s just no way to swim in both oceans.

All of the above SSPX quotes are from its official websites:

This is obviously not worth reading passed your charismatic garbage condemned bt the Council of Trent,
Also, speaking in tongues is NOT gibberish, it is merely understanding other languages that you do not know, or speaking in your own tongue but others can understand you.
St Paul affirms this is also the lowest of gifts. If this gift is so wide spread, where are the rasing of the dead? It just proves your side is completely false, and mostly filled with baby boomers. Most of these Traditional Churches are 85% people born before 1969. Thats a fact… they dislike charismatic “worship” since it is only about feeling, which is a condemned heresy called Modernism…

      You lost me at ‘garbage’.

Thanks for proving yet again that traditionalists have no clue about the Scriptures.

As for your faulty understanding of ‘Tongues’, you can start with 1 Corinthians 14:2, “For those who speak in a tongue do not speak to other people but to God; for nobody understands them, since they are speaking mysteries in the Spirit.”

Maybe you should wonder why traditionalists can’t exhibit even the ‘lowliest’ of gifts.

We are called to love, not to talk condescendingly. Why are you putting a negative meaning to Jewish people? They are still God’s people, and quite a few of them have embraced Jesus.
We must never forget that everything is to be about Jesus and what He did for us. None of us can make it into heaven by our own works. The Bible is very clear on that. The 10 Commandments are proof that we need Jesus and His mercy and forgiveness. DO We Not STILL need to confess? Are we perfectly keeping the Commandments of God?
Please, do not judge the Jewish (God is faithful, and He did make a covenant with them!) or Christians who operate in the charisms. Charisms are completely biblical. As for tongues, the Bible says this is for self edification.
Christianity is a walk with God. We are all still maturing under His loving care and guidance. Can we edify ourselves? The Holy Spirit is our Sanctifier. Also, there are still miracles out there wrought by God. Lots of them. (There are healings. There are Eucharistic miracles. God is still active and working all around us and within us.)
I pray that God will open your eyes to miracles so that you can see and acknowledge them with the awe and reverence due to God.
Isaiah 6 talks about how they have eyes but will not see and how they have ears but will not hear. Was this not pronounced over the Jewish people at the time? And when Jesus came along, did not most of His people reject Him? But did He not refer to them as the children?
Please, do not judge with human understanding. God is the ultimate judge. We are not to lean on our own understanding, but with prayer and supplication to turn to God, to take every thought captive and to turn to Him.
Coming back to Isaiah 6, how many of us have eyes but do not see and have ears but do not hear?
Also, let’s not forget how the apostles of old walked on the earth. Did they swear and cuss or did they try to bring truth to people with love? Did Paul also not admonish believers that if they think they stand they should be careful not to fall? We can all still fall, we are not free from making mistakes (we are human, not God!).
Also, check out the Book of Acts. The Holy Spirit does have manifestations. Read it slowly and watch for the details. You will see and understand. And don’t forget that we, coming from the Gentiles, had the privilege of coming to God because the Holy Spirit fell on Cornelius and his household, and because God gave Peter the vision of the sheet beforehand. And, all of the original apostles were Jewish. In fact, Mary was Jewish, Joseph was Jewish, and Jesus was born there.
      I hope this helps.
